Vision Leadership Institute (VLI) was founded in 2000 and since its inception, Vision Leadership Institute has served a diverse population and was founded on the principle of Empowerment as a response to address the need for capable youth leaders. By providing a safe and accessible learning environment, the Institute gives youth and women an opportunity to develop and strengthen a commitment not to choose drugs, violence, and high-risk sexual behavior.
Vision Leadership Institute (VLI) initially only operated during project periods. Since 2000, VLI has built several critical partnerships and collaborative bridges as evidenced below:
· “Young Women of Vision: Connecting South Carolina Women in the Harlem Renaissance”- Vision Leadership Institute, South Carolina Humanities Council, and the Women’s Studies Department (University of South Carolina)
· SCALE Project/Youth Empowerment Committee- School of Public Health (University of South Carolina)
· “Photovoice” –Vision Leadership Institute, School of Public Health (University of South Carolina), Women’s Studies Department (University of South Carolina), KOBAN Columbia (Gonzalez Gardens)
· “Photovoice --- Focus on Youth” (Public Exhibit) –Vision Leadership Institute, Richland County Public Library “1st Annual South Carolina
Young Women’s Health Summit” –Vision Leadership Institute, United States Department of Health and Human Services, South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
· “Daughters: For Parents of Girls” –Vision Leadership Institute, Dads and Daughters, Seawell Elam Foundation
Vision
To serve as a clearing house for Best Practices in Youth Leadership Development, HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Services, Health Promotion Services and Academic Excellence for youth. To provide an Institute to develop and prepare youth and women for leadership, excellence, and service in a global environment.
Mission
To provide health promotion services, youth leadership development, and academic enrichment to South Carolina youth and provide health awareness for women throughout South Carolina.
